Why quitting earlier returns more

The share of smoking's cost that quitting can recover falls the later someone quits, because Jha et al. found less excess risk is reversible the longer someone has already smoked. The calculator above already applies this to your entered age. These are the same published bands at a few reference ages, so the pattern is visible without changing the form:

This page holds those same inputs steady and instead shows the shape of recovery over time (at quit day, one year, five years, ten years and the eventual ceiling), because how quickly life expectancy comes back is a different question from what it is right now.

Why does the recovered figure grow quickly at first and then slow down?

The model returns recoverable time on a curve that is front loaded: about half of what is recoverable comes back within roughly three years of staying smoke-free, and about ninety percent by ten years. That shape is anchored to real cessation milestones such as coronary risk roughly halving within a year and approaching a never-smoker's by about fifteen years, though the single curve used to connect those milestones is a modelling choice, not itself a published curve.

Does quitting at 50 or 60 still help?

Yes, though less of the time comes back the later someone quits. Jha et al.'s bands put the recoverable share at about ninety nine percent quitting at 30, fifty nine percent at 50 and thirty nine percent at 60, falling to a floor of twenty percent from about age seventy. Quitting later still recovers real time, just a smaller share of it.
