Choosing an app

Is a quit smoking app free?

Most are free to download. Where the paid part starts is what differs, app by app.

The disclosure, before anything else

I build one of the apps on this page, The Long View. Everything about the others comes from their own store listings, read in October 2026. Prices and what sits behind a paywall change, and differ by country, so check the listing before you decide.

App by app

  • quitSTART (US National Cancer Institute). No paid tier at the time of writing. Tips, challenges and a tracker. The quitSTART page goes through it.
  • Smoke Free. The listing says the core app is free to use and free of ads: time quit, money saved, cigarettes not smoked and a craving log. Pro adds daily missions and an AI Quit Coach.
  • QuitNow!. Free to use with in-app purchases. QuitNow PRO is a subscription inside the app, and QuitNow! PRO is also sold as a separate app for a one-time price.
  • Kwit. Free to download with subscriptions for the full program. The free part is a working tracker; the levels and most of the cognitive behavioral therapy material are on the paid side.
  • QuitSure. Free to download. It is a program more than a tracker, and the listing is the place to check what the program costs. The QuitSure page covers it.
  • The Long View (mine). Next section.

What The Long View gives you without paying

The estimate the app is built on: what smoking has likely cost you in years of life, and how much comes back the longer you stay smoke-free, next to a photo of your own reason. Also the smoke-free day count, the daily check-in, the craving button and the next health milestone. No account is needed.

Premium adds money saved, the quit plan, widgets, the watch apps, sync and the full milestone timeline. One more thing about Premium: after 365 smoke-free days you can cancel and keep every Premium feature. The Premium page has the plans and a table of what is in each.

How to choose without paying first

  • If you will never pay for an app, start with quitSTART.
  • If you want the most statistics without paying, Smoke Free.
  • If you want to see what quitting gives back in years, try the quit smoking calculator in your browser, then The Long View.

The no-subscription page lists the one-time purchases for anyone who would rather pay once.
