Great American Smokeout 2026: using the day as your quit day
A date on the calendar is a useful thing. Here is a plain plan for the month before it and the day itself.

The short answer
The Great American Smokeout is run by the American Cancer Society on the third Thursday of November. In 2026 that is Thursday, November 19. The Society invites people who smoke to use the day to start quitting, or to make a plan to quit.
It is a fixed date with a lot of other people aiming at it, which helps some people. If you are reading this in the weeks before, you have time to plan rather than rush.
Before the day
- Choose how. Stop at once, or step down toward the date. The research on both is in the guide on cold turkey versus gradual quitting. The Quit plan walks down to zero over a length you choose: days, weeks or months. If you want to reach zero on November 19, count back that many days and start there.
- See what you are trading. Put your numbers into the cost calculator and the quit smoking calculator. Money and years are both motivators, and both come with the working shown.
- Pick your reason photo. One picture of why. It sits behind the number on the phone, the watch and the widgets, and behind the craving button.
- Tell someone. One person is enough.
- Talk to a professional if you want to. A doctor or a quitline can go through your options. In the US, that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
On the day
- Open the daily check-in first thing and log the day as it goes.
- Keep the craving button handy: a 3-minute breathing screen with your reason photo on it.
- Plan the first evening and the first coffee. Those are the usual moments people name.
- Put the widget on your home screen, or the app on your watch, so the number stays in view.
The app runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Android phones and tablets, Wear OS, Windows and Linux. Get the app, or see Premium for what each plan includes.
If the day goes sideways
It happens, and it is common. A slip costs time through that day and does not reset what you have already banked. The page on smoking again after quitting explains the working, and the day after a bad day is still a good day to start.
