Scope, stated plainly

Quit chewing tobacco: the money works, the years do not

Half of what this site offers transfers to smokeless tobacco cleanly. The other half does not, and pretending otherwise would be inventing a number.

The money side works, and you can use it today

The money arithmetic is the same as it is for cigarettes: what one portion costs, multiplied by how many you get through. Everything stays in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is nothing to sign into.

A 6.50 tin of 15 works out to 0.43 a portion.

What that costs over time, in whatever currency you typed.
OverTinsCost
A week 3 tins 18
A month n/a 79
A year 146 tins 950
Five years n/a 4,748
Spent so far n/a 4,748

There is no time or life expectancy column here, and that is deliberate. The next section explains why putting one in would be inventing a number.

Why there is no years figure here

The estimate this site is built on comes from a life table plus published research linking cigarettes smoked per day to survival. That is a specific exposure, measured a specific way, in populations followed for decades.

Smokeless tobacco is a different exposure. It is used differently, it is absorbed differently, and the health research on it is its own body of work. Taking a figure derived from cigarettes and relabelling it for dip would produce a number that looks authoritative and means nothing.

So this site does not do it. If you want to know what smokeless tobacco is doing to you, that is a question for a doctor or a quitline, and both are better sources than any app.

What the app still does for a smokeless quit

Everything that counts what you actually did:

  • The daily check-in. Log what actually happened. A day you used is a number you record, and your count carries on.
  • Your day count. Days without, counted up, free forever.
  • A photo of your reason, behind the number, on every device.
  • Your full history, every day of it.
  • Money saved, once you have entered a tin price, which is the figure that actually lands for most people quitting dip.

What you will see at the top of the app is a years figure built for cigarettes. If you are quitting smokeless tobacco, treat that number as not applying to you. It is the one part of the app this page is asking you to ignore.

Where to get real help

Quitlines cover all tobacco, cigarettes and smokeless alike. In the United States that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW, and there is a list of every country's line in the questions section on the home page. They are free, they are staffed by people trained for this, and they have far more evidence behind them than any app does.

This page does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition and is not medical advice. It deliberately declines to estimate the health effect of smokeless tobacco, because the model behind this site is built for cigarettes. No guarantee is made or offered about the accuracy of any figure or calculation on this site. Talk to a doctor or a quitline. In the US, that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
