Quit vaping apps, and the number nobody can give you

The Long View measures cigarettes. This page is about what that means if you vape, written by the person who builds it.

The short answer

Roughly half of this app works for a vape quit and half of it does not, and the half that does not is the half it is named for.

The daily check-in, the day count, the photo of your reason, the full history and the quit plan are all just careful counting. They do not care what you are quitting. The years figure is different. It rests on research linking cigarettes smoked per day to survival, and that research does not exist for vaping, because vaping has not been around long enough to produce it.

So the app will not show you a years figure for vaping. Not as a limitation being worked on, but on purpose.

Why nobody can give you that number yet

The estimate in this app comes from two things: a life table, which says how long people of your age and sex live on average, and published work on how smoking shifts that. The strongest of it follows large groups of people for decades and compares those who smoked, those who quit at various ages, and those who never started. That is what makes it possible to say something useful about years.

Cigarettes have that evidence because people have been smoking them, and researchers have been following those people, for a very long time. Vaping does not, because it is young. That is a statement about the state of the evidence. Health authorities have plenty to say on that question and this app is not one of them.

What follows is the part that matters here: any app that shows you years won back from quitting vaping is showing you a number nobody has established. It may be presented confidently. It is still invented. That is the single most useful thing this page can tell you, and it is worth knowing before you install anything, including this.

What does work

  • The daily check-in. You log what actually happened. A day you vaped is a number you record and your count carries on, which is the whole design of this app and the thing most quit trackers get wrong.
  • Your day count. Days without, counted up. Free forever.
  • A photo of your reason. The picture of why you are doing it, sat behind the number, on the phone and the watch and the home screen widget.
  • Your full history. Every day of it, kept, and yours to look at whenever.
  • Money saved. If you enter what a pod or a bottle costs you as the pack price, the money side works exactly as it does for cigarettes, because that is just counting what you did not buy.

What does not work is the headline. The number at the top of the app is a years figure, and for a vape quit it would be measuring something the model was not built for.

What to use instead, or as well

The free national services first, because they are the most effective option available and they are set up for every kind of nicotine. In the United States that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW, and there is a list of every country's line in the questions section on the home page. In England, local stop smoking services are free through the NHS.

For an app, the honest advice is the same one this site gives about quit smoking apps generally: pick one that counts what you actually do. The comparison of quit smoking apps is organized by what each one is genuinely good at, including where they beat this one.

This page does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition, makes no claim about the health effects of vaping in either direction, and is not medical advice. No guarantee is made or offered about the accuracy of any figure or calculation on this site. Talk to a doctor or a quitline about stopping. In the US, that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
