Quit Tracker alternatives, compared honestly

The most installed quit smoking app on Google Play that I found. Here is what it does well, and where to go when you want something else.

The disclosure, before anything else

I build a competing quit smoking app, The Long View, and this site exists to support it. Read this page as one developer describing another developer's product, with the incentive stated up front. Quit Tracker is never scored against mine here, and mine appears once, near the end, clearly marked.

Everything below comes from Quit Tracker's own Google Play listing, checked on the date above, so you can confirm each point in a minute.

What Quit Tracker does well

Quit Tracker: Stop Smoking is published by despDev, who also make the habit tracker Quitzilla. It has more than five million installs and about 4.7 stars from roughly 180,000 reviews, which puts it ahead of every other quit smoking app I checked on Google Play by installs.

It keeps things simple. The main screens show how long you have gone without smoking, the money you have saved, the cigarettes you have not smoked and the life it says you have regained, with a health timeline of what changes in your body and rewards to aim for along the way. Its reviewers mention distraction games and a diary of reasons, and several describe a slip that did not wipe out their savings total.

Two things worth checking

Where it runs. Its Google Play listing is the only store listing I found for it. If you might move to an iPhone, pick an app that is on both.

What it shares. The Google Play data safety section says the app may share location, app activity and two other data types with third parties, may collect location, financial info and three other types, and that data can't be deleted. It also contains ads and in-app purchases. Developers update that section, so open it and read the current version before you decide.

Why people leave, and where to go

Searches for a Quit Tracker alternative come from a handful of different reasons, and each one has its own answer.

  • Privacy. EasyQuit says there is no log in and your data stays on your phone. quitSTART, from the US National Cancer Institute, has no in-app purchases at all.
  • A new phone on the other platform. Smoke Free, QuitNow! and Kwit are all published for iPhone and Android.
  • The ads. Smoke Free says its free tier is free of ads. The subscription guide sets out what each app charges for.
  • Doing it alone is the hard part. QuitNow! has a chat full of people quitting at the same time and a monthly live session with a stop smoking expert.

Ask how "life regained" is worked out

Several apps show a figure for life regained, Quit Tracker among them, and its listing does not say how that figure is calculated. It is a fair question to put to any app, including mine, because the number is the one people remember.

The Long View's estimate comes from a published life table and peer-reviewed research on what quitting gives back at each age, and every step is on the methodology page. You can run it for yourself, without installing anything, on the life expectancy calculator.

Where The Long View fits, stated as disclosure

Mine, so read it as disclosure. The Long View shows one estimate, in years, beside a photo of your own reason for quitting, and a daily check-in moves that number in both directions. A day you smoked is a number you log, and the smoke-free time you already built stays counted.

The core is free forever, has no ads and asks for no account. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Android, Wear OS and Windows, and after a year of smoke-free days you cancel and keep everything, at no charge.

Common questions

Is Quit Tracker: Stop Smoking on iPhone?

Its Google Play listing, from despDev, is the only store listing I found for it. Smoke Free, QuitNow! and Kwit are all published for both iPhone and Android.

Is Quit Tracker free?

It is free to download, and its listing says it contains ads and offers in-app purchases.

What data does Quit Tracker collect?

Its data safety section says it may share location, app activity and two other data types with third parties, may collect location, financial info and three other types, and that data can't be deleted. Read the current section yourself, since developers can change it.

Nothing on this page diagnoses, treats or prevents any condition, and none of it is medical advice. App features, prices and claims change, and store listings differ by region, so check the current listing yourself. Talk to a doctor or a quitline about stopping smoking. In the US, that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

The number people remember is the one worth asking about.
