I quit smoking years ago: what did I get back?
Most of the answer is already behind you. Recovery is front loaded, which means the years you have banked count for more than the ones still ahead.

Almost everything written about quitting is aimed at people who have not done it yet. If you stopped six or seven or ten years ago, the question is different and nobody answers it: what did I already get? This page is that table.
The shape, before any numbers
Recovery in this model is not a straight line and it is not a switch. It follows a curve that runs quickest at the start and flattens, with a time constant of five years. That single fact answers most of the question on its own, because the share of your available recovery that has arrived depends only on how long you have been smoke-free:

Those percentages do not depend on how much you smoked or how old you were. They are the shape of the curve. How much they are a percentage of is the part that depends on you, and that is the next section.
A worked example, year by year
Take a man who smoked 15 a day from 20 to 40, then stopped. Twenty years of smoking put 3.54 years of life expectancy at stake. He quit at 40, where the measured recoverable share is about 88.5%, so 3.13 of those years were available to come back. Here is where they went.

Read the third year. That is the crossover: the point where more of the recovery is behind you than in front of you. It arrives sooner than almost anyone expects, and it arrives whether or not anybody told you it had.
By year three, more of the recovery is behind you than ahead of you.
What decides how much was available in the first place
Two things, and neither of them is how long ago you stopped.
- How much you smoked, and for how long. This sets the size of the loss. The measured rate is about 17 minutes of life per cigarette for men and 22 for women (Jackson et al., 2025), applied to your lifetime count and then curved so that very long histories do not scale forever.
- How old you were on your last day. This sets the share of that loss that can return. Near all of it in your twenties, about 88.5% at 40, about 59% at 50, about 39% at 60 (Jha et al., 2013, read as a smooth curve between published band midpoints).
Notice what is not on that list: the number of years since. Those only decide how far along the curve you are. Somebody eight years out from a quit at 30 and somebody eight years out from a quit at 55 are the same distance along and are collecting on very different totals.
If you smoked for fifty years and stopped, or have not yet
The long-history case is worth its own paragraph, because the numbers move in a direction people do not predict. A man who smoked 15 a day from 20 to 70 has 8.77 years at stake, far more than the 3.54 above. But the recoverable share at 70 has fallen to 20%, which is the floor this model uses, so only about 1.75 years are available to come back.
That cuts both ways, and both ways are worth saying. A fifty year history means most of the cost is fixed. It also means 1.75 years are sitting there unclaimed, and the curve on them behaves exactly like the curve on anyone else's: about 18% of it inside the first year. If you are reading this having smoked that long and not stopped, the honest position is that the figure is smaller than it would have been and it is not zero. If you already stopped, the honest position is that you took the whole of what was left.
What this cannot tell you
- It is a population average. The model knows your age, your sex and a count of cigarettes. It does not know anything a doctor would measure, and it cannot tell you whether any particular damage has healed.
- The baseline is not a never-smoker figure. It comes from the Social Security Administration's period life table, which describes the general population, smokers included. That makes it a slight underestimate of what quitting is worth.
- The curve is a model of the published bands. Jha et al. measured how much of the excess risk is avoided by age at quitting. The five year time constant is this site's smooth reading of how that arrives over time, stated on the methodology page so you can disagree with it.
