Is it too late to quit smoking at 60?
No. The share that comes back has fallen a long way, and what is left is still counted in years.

The model behind this site puts the recoverable share at about 39% for someone quitting at 60, against about 59% at 50 and about 99.5% at 30. That is a real decline and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. But 39% is applied to a much larger loss, because forty years of smoking banks far more cost than ten does. For an ordinary habit that works out at nearly three years of life expectancy, and roughly half of it is back within three smoke-free years.
One worked example, in full
Take a man who has smoked 15 a day since he was 20, and is now 60. Every row below except the two marked measured is computed by this site's model, using the math on the methodology page. The measured inputs are the 17 minutes of life per cigarette for men (Jackson et al., 2025) and the recoverable share by age at quitting (Jha et al., 2013).

The number people find hardest is the last one. Four and a third years do not come back at any point, no matter how long the quit lasts. That is what forty years costs, and it is the honest half of the answer. The other half is the 2.76 sitting directly above it, which is still available and which only starts moving on the day the smoking stops.
How fast it comes back
This is the part that surprises people who assume a late quit is a slow one. Recovery in this model is front loaded: it runs quickest at the start and flattens out later.

Half of everything available is back inside three years. Ninety per cent of it is back inside ten. Whatever else is true about quitting at 60, the return on the first year is the largest single year's return you will ever get, and it is the one you get by starting.
The first smoke-free year returns more than any year that follows it.
What waiting until 70 would cost
Ten more years of the same habit does two things at once, and only one of them is obvious. The loss keeps growing, from 7.08 years to 8.77. Less obviously, the recoverable share keeps falling, from 39% down to 20%, which is the floor this model will not go below. Multiply those together and the recoverable total drops from 2.76 years to 1.75.
So the decade of extra smoking shrinks the recovery, by about a year of life expectancy, before the recovery clock has been allowed to start at all. That is the cost of waiting, stated as a number, and it is why "later" is a more expensive answer than it sounds.
What this cannot tell you
- Sixty is past the last measured midpoint. Jha et al. published a band for quitting between 55 and 64, worth roughly 4 years or about 40% of the loss. This site reads a smooth curve between band midpoints (29.5, 39.5, 49.5, 59.5), and 60 sits just past the last of those. The 39% is this site continuing the measured slope by half a year. Anything well beyond 64 is extrapolation, floored at 20%.
- The baseline is not a never-smoker figure. It comes from the Social Security Administration's period life table, which describes the whole general population, smokers included. That makes it a slight underestimate of what quitting is worth.
- A higher baseline at 60 is not a reward for waiting. The 81.79 above is higher than the figure a 50 year old reads, because a life table at 60 already reflects having survived to 60. It is a different yardstick.
