A number about your age
Apple Health Age and smoking
Apple is about to make one idea familiar to a lot of people: a number that says how old your body looks next to how old you are. Here is what it measures.
Written by Lee H. Published 11 September 2026. I build a quit smoking app, so treat the last section as disclosure.
What Apple announced
On 9 September 2026, alongside Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, Apple described a redesigned Health app for iOS 27 built around Apple Intelligence. Two of the new numbers got most of the attention.
- Health Age, which compares what your body measures against your actual age. Reporting describes the inputs as VO2 max, resting heart rate, heart rate variability and sleep, with blood biomarkers as an option through a Quest panel priced at $119 for more than fifty markers.
- A readiness score from 0 to 10, tied to Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, reading out as Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It.
There is also a Longevity section covering seven areas: heart health, sleep, mental wellbeing, movement, metabolic health, hearing and nutrition. Apple said the redesigned app arrives later in 2026, in US English first, without naming a date.
This page is written from Apple's announcement and the reporting around it, on 11 September 2026. Nothing here is from Apple, and none of it is a preview I have seen. Apple has not published a complete input list, hardware requirement or release date, and every detail may change before it ships. Check Apple for the current facts.
What the inputs have in common
Look at the list again: VO2 max, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep, blood markers. Every one of those is a measurement of your body right now, taken by a sensor or a laboratory.
That is a genuinely hard thing to build and it answers a real question: how is this body doing today. It is also the reason the picture has an edge to it. A measurement taken today knows what has happened to you. It does not necessarily know what you did, and it does not know what you would get back by stopping.
Smoking does not appear among the inputs Apple described. That is worth stating carefully. It does not mean Apple thinks smoking is unimportant, and it does not mean Health Age will be blind to a smoker: someone who smokes heavily will often have a worse VO2 max and a higher resting heart rate, and those are inputs. What it means is narrower and still useful to know. The habit itself, how much and for how long, is not something the announcement said you would enter.
Why that gap is the interesting part
Smoking is the largest single thing most people can change about how fast they are ageing, and it is the one with the best documented reversal. That combination is unusual. Most of what drives a health age number is either slow to move or not yours to move.
The published research puts numbers on both halves:
- Jackson, Jarvis and West, in Addiction in 2025, put a single cigarette at roughly twenty minutes of life.
- Jha and colleagues, in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, measured how much comes back by the age you stop. Quitting before 40 avoids most of the excess risk. Quitting at 60 still returns real years.
A sensor reading tells you where you are. Those two papers tell you how you got there and what happens if you stop, which is the part that changes a decision.
What you can work out today
The quit smoking calculator on this site answers the smoking half of the same question, and it works in a browser now. Enter your age, how much you smoke and how long you have smoked, and it estimates the years the habit has likely cost and the years stopping returns.
It asks for no account, sends nothing to a server, and needs no watch and no blood test. Every figure it uses is published on the methodology page, including the point where the model stops being a measurement and becomes an assumption.
It is an estimate from population averages, which is a different kind of thing from a sensor reading of your own body. Both are worth having and neither replaces the other.
Where my app fits, stated as disclosure
I build The Long View, which is a paid quit smoking app, so read this as disclosure. It carries the same estimate the free calculator does, keeps it current as you stay stopped, and runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and Windows.
The part worth knowing if you found this page through the Apple news: the estimate, the daily check-in, your history and the smoke-free day count are free on the phone, and after a year of smoke-free days the app tells you how to cancel and lets you keep everything permanently. You do not need to buy anything to get the number.
Common questions
Will Health Age tell me to stop smoking?
Nothing here can say. Apple described a Longevity section and personal guidance driven by Apple Intelligence, and it would be reasonable to expect smoking to come up somewhere in a health app. What the announcement described was the measured inputs, and smoking was not among them.
Is a health age number accurate?
Every number of this kind, Apple's and this site's, is a model. Apple's reads sensors and lab work; this site's reads published population statistics. Both are estimates with real limits, and the honest version of either one tells you where those limits are. That is what the methodology page is for here.
Do I need an Apple Watch for Health Age?
Reporting has disagreed on this, some saying an Apple Intelligence capable iPhone and some saying an Apple Watch, and Apple has not published a requirement. The readiness score was tied specifically to Series 12 and Ultra 4. Wait for Apple to confirm it.
Does the calculator here need an Apple device?
No. It runs in any browser on any device, including Android and Windows.
Nothing on this page diagnoses, treats or prevents any condition, and none of it is medical advice. This page is not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple, and the researchers cited have not reviewed or endorsed anything here. Product details announced before release change. Talk to a doctor or a quitline about stopping smoking. In the US, that is 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
A sensor knows how your body is doing. It does not know what you would get back by stopping.
