The cost of smoking in Ireland
Among the most expensive places in the European Union to smoke, and it moves every October.

Three things that make Ireland different
It is at or near the top of the EU.
Ireland has spent years as the most expensive or close to the most expensive place to buy cigarettes in the European Union. A pack costs a multiple of what the same pack costs in several other member states, which comes from policy.
The Budget moves it, most years, in October.
Excise on tobacco has been raised in most recent Irish Budgets, announced in October and effective immediately or shortly after. If you are reading this before an October, the figure below is likely to be an underestimate by the time you finish quitting.
The price is the policy.
Ireland's tobacco strategy leans heavily on price as the deterrent, so the number on the pack is doing intentional work. That is worth knowing, because it means the cost of continuing is designed to keep rising.
Reported figures for a pack of 20 sit around €17 to €19, with common brands near the top of that. That is a wide spread, and it is why the rest of this page asks you to use your own receipt.
What it costs a year

Read the row nearest your own count and the column nearest your own price. Ten years is that figure times ten, near enough, and it is usually the number that lands.
The other cost
Money is the half of this that is easy to check. The other half is time, and it does not depend on which country you bought the pack in: a cigarette costs roughly the same 20 minutes of life expectancy in Ireland as anywhere else, because the research behind that figure is about the smoke.

The price range is drawn from reported retail figures, because no official price index exists for the thing a person actually pays at a counter. It is given as a range on purpose. The structural facts above, about how the duty is charged and when it moves, are the durable part; the price is the part that will be out of date first.
Every yearly figure in the table is a multiplication you can check by hand: your daily count, divided by 20, times the pack price, times 365.25. Nothing else is in it.
