The cost of smoking in the UK
Tobacco duty is more than four fifths of what you hand over, and it rises by formula.

Three things that make the UK different
The duty is the higher of two sums.
UK tobacco duty is charged as the greater of two calculations: 16.5% of the retail price plus a fixed amount per thousand cigarettes, or a flat minimum per thousand. The minimum floor is what stops a cheap brand being meaningfully cheaper, which is why the gap between budget and premium packs is far narrower here than the gap in their pre-tax cost.
It rises on a set schedule.
The escalator raises duty above inflation each year, and one-off increases are applied on top in some Budgets. A further rise is scheduled for October 2026. Whatever you pay today is the floor.
Tax is most of the price.
Duty plus VAT accounts for over 80% of a UK pack. You are not mainly buying tobacco, and the part you are buying is the part that goes up every year.
Reported figures for a pack of 20 sit somewhere between about £14 and £18 depending on brand and retailer, with premium brands above that. That is a wide spread, and it is why the rest of this page asks you to use your own receipt.
What it costs a year
Worked at £16 a pack of 20, a middle figure within the reported range. The three columns show the low end of the reported range, that middle figure, and the high end, so you can see how much the answer moves with the price alone.

Read the row nearest your own count and the column nearest your own price. Ten years is that figure times ten, near enough, and it is usually the number that lands.
The other cost
Money is the half of this that is easy to check. The other half is time, and it does not depend on which country you bought the pack in: a cigarette costs roughly the same 20 minutes of life expectancy in the UK as anywhere else, because the research behind that figure is about the smoke.

Where the numbers on this page came from
The price range is drawn from reported retail figures, because no official price index exists for the thing a person actually pays at a counter. It is given as a range on purpose. The structural facts above, about how the duty is charged and when it moves, are the durable part; the price is the part that will be out of date first.
Every yearly figure in the table is a multiplication you can check by hand: your daily count, divided by 20, times the pack price, times 365.25. Nothing else is in it.
